Rome, New York is located in the foothills of the Adirondacks and due to its central location within the state, it is also known for being at the “Center of it All.” In 1758, the city was known as Fort Stanwix and during the 1700s to 1800s was considered to be an important transportation point for both goods and people along the great passage during the founding of the country. During the Industrial Revolution, Rome was called the “Copper City” due to the number of metal industries located there, which produced about 10% of the country's copper. Rome, as it goes by today, was incorporated in 1870. A famous Roman resident from the past is Francis Bellamy who is now buried in the city cemetery and was the author of the Pledge of Allegiance. Rome was also the location of Woodstock 99, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the original Woodstock. To learn more about Rome's colorful history, the Fort Stanwix National Monument features a visitors center and museum offering an array of information.
